Writing skills 1

The Writing Skills series of courses constitute a comprehensive review of all of the basic skills involved in essay writing.  They begin with a dissection of the parts and functions of the paragraph; expand their scope to incorporate the whole essay; then add all of the ten logical techniques that are used by essay writers to approach topics.  In the second semester of the third year, the Writing Skills courses incorporate the specialties of the students.  Accordingly, tourism majors may, for example, read model essays from tour guides and write descriptive essays about interesting tourist spots, and political science majors may read about the French Revolution and write an analytical essay comparing it to the American Revolution.  The basic text of the Writing Skills course is Simplified Essay Skills by Katherine Ploeger, and the syllabus for each course is available through the instructor.
